It was created by local people, people of vision, determination and commitment, who have used their skills, knowledge, and experience every day since then, alongside people of like mind from far and wide, working towards a recovery that is community-led and community-focused. It is because LCAT is the best example of this approach that I agreed to join their advisory council, enabling me to learn first-hand about the opportunities and challenges inherent in a therapeutic model that centres local people, rather than institutions, budgets, or the objectives of people and organisations whose interests are not those of the community. Now that LCAT has taken the big step of registering as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, exchanging the control offered by Community Interest Company status for the chance of sustainability that charity registration might facilitate, I have agreed to be a member of the first Board of Trustees. I hope that this step leads to better outcomes for local people, especially those affected by the fire, but more than that, I hope it removes another excuse for investing decision-making power and scarce resources in institutional, transactional organisations, when the investment could be made more effectively in local people, households, neighbourhoods and their organisations. Wish us luck! Show less

Part of the turnaround involved formalising the "soft" federation arrangement between Stockwell and Jessop Primary School, an arrangement that had enabled sharing of resources and knowledge between the schools and helped Jessop achieve its Outstanding grade from Ofsted. Bond's offer includes a consultancy practice, a suite of learning and training opportunities, and a network of relationships spanning the sector and linking it to donors and policy makers. Accountability, transparency and quality are key to effective international development. The central questions of effectiveness are simple: Do we achieve the changes we claim? Can we prove it?These claims are not small: reduced poverty, protection of rights, saving lives and more.Improving the quality of international development, Bond’s effectiveness programme has been developed by the sector for the sector. Bond's tools assess performance, evaluate effects, provide evidence of change, and build impact. My role was to help Bond to learn from the effectiveness services they already delivered, the work of its members, partners, and others, and to build on those services for the benefit of people in the UK and the developing South.Having been focused on leading Bond's training, consultancy, and funding policy work, I then led the development of Bond's 2016-21 strategy between April and September 2015, drawing on intelligence and insight from within and without the Bond network. My role was to maintain and develop the organisation during a time of significant pressure on our core income streams, controlling costs and increasing productivity. I supported a diverse board of non-executive directors, made the most of our excellent relationships with corporate partners (including several Magic Circle law firms), and lobbied government effectively both centrally and locally. I took responsibility for developing a six borough partnership of Law Centres and Citizen Advice Bureaux across South West London with £500,000 raised from the Big Lottery Fund, and a cross-London Law Centre partnership that held one of the largest EHRC grants for legal advice in the UK. I led a management team that secured substantial funding through contracts, grants, and donations, and a much publicised restructuring project backed by public, private and charitable investment.
