My traineeship at the Embassy of Belgium in Bangkok took place during a holiday and transition period in Belgium. Therefore, during the absence of one or two of the diplomats, I had the chance to not only directly assist the Ambassador (H.E. Mr. Philippe Kridelka), but also, thanks to his trust, to accomplish an actual attaché or diplomat's work, including by reporting directly to our MFA in Brussels myself. It was also a good opportunity to improve my language skills (written and spoken) in Dutch and English. I assisted or replaced the diplomats in several high level professional activities: representation of Belgium at the EU delegation, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, at UNESCAP, and other important events or meetings (international conferences).I covered daily and weekly events in the four countries (Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos) and reported to our MFA in Brussels when needed, while adding my personal analysis. I also covered more specific and long term issues, events or projects regarding conflicts, human rights, economy, education, culture, environment and development cooperation. Additionnaly, I became an intermediary for public relations with our Thai and international (private and public) partners, I was in charge of social networks, while participating to the planning and management of public relations events, including by (co)writing or submitting suggestions to the Ambassador's speeches and appearances. I also assisted the consular section by handling the case of Belgian citizens detained in Thailand, including by visiting them in prison on a regular basis. Most importantly to me, I managed to cover and report on an entire 5 days high-level international conference on terrorism and radicalization, where I had the chance to add my knowledge of these issues with an in-depth an critical analysis in my report, which was highly appreciated by our MFA in Brussels.
