The central focus of my professional career is and continues to be on the understanding and prevention of youth, school, and family violence. While I appreciate and utilize the research literature, my understanding and application of the literature is deeply influenced by my long experience in working with the programs and agencies that do the real, direct and critically important work in our urban neighborhoods. I also do my best to understand the perspectives of our urban youth who cope with the consequences of concentrated poverty every day of their lives. My approach is always grounded in the social context in which lives are lived. Some of the broad approaches that inform my work include: positive youth development, youth organizing, neighborhood cohesion and trust (collective efficacy), social justice and human rights, the influence of family and parenting on the lives of young people, and the importance of "good schools" that promote and reflect the dignity of all.
