I left school to join a new team of three, responsible for transitioning a midsized financial services firm to web-based applications. As the team grew, we built and maintained half a dozen apps from scratch, including the company's main employee/client portal, and contributed to at least a half-dozen more.Our primary users, in many cases, were fund accountants. Some used our applications ten hours a day, at a cadence I remember finding a bit horrifying. The experience taught me a lot about working with specialists in unfamiliar fields: the particular importance of providing expert users with a frictionless, consistent, detail-oriented UX; and the need to thoroughly understand the business concepts and processes that underlie the tools you're building. • Oversaw creation and development of generalized front-end component libraries for use throughout the organization. • Influential in organization-level UI architecture and design. • Worked frequently with the firm's creative director as a sounding board on UI/UX issues throughout the firm's portfolio. • Evaluated new front-end technologies (e.g. Ember, AngularJS, D3) for firmwide adoption. • Introduced and advocated for adoption of UI best practices, including SVG injection, perceptual color scaling, touch/click abstraction, and unified keyboard event delegation. • Viewed as the firm's foremost authority on CSS architecture, data visualization, typefaces, and other front-end areas of expertise. • Mentored a procession of junior developers, for many of whom it was their first full-time job.

I answered an informal call for technology help on this fledgling farm-to-table CSA's website, and began consulting on a nights-and-weekends basis, initially in exchange for meat. My responsibilities grew as the company did, and eventually I was overseeing the technical aspects of their customer portal, email marketing integration, order database, billing system, SaaS infrastructure, and server operations.As the company expanded, they offered me a full-time job overseeing their technology operations. To my lasting regret, I opted to keep my day job, thinking I'd learn more in a larger organization with a broader base of engineering talent. • Worked directly with the founder and executive team. • Primary point of contact for all technical operations. • Responsible for all systems architecture decisions. • Designed, built, maintained, and operated the company's main customer portal using Heroku, MongoDB, Node.js, and Ember. • Responsible for technical and presentational aspects of the company's email marketing campaigns, conducted via Wufoo. • Designed, built, and supervised an automated monthly billing process using Stripe and webhooks. This system processed a vast majority of the company's incoming cash flow.

Worked in the Administration and Finance (ANF) division. • Part of the team responsible for preparing the governor's annual budget proposal under the Romney and Patrick administrations. • Built financial research and analysis tools for use within administrative departments throughout the Commonwealth.

I began working for this local software company as a high school student and eventually joined them full-time. • Designed, built and maintained a full-stack web application that allows visiting foreign nationals to enter their visa credentials on a self-service basis, for use by their host institutions in complying with US visa requirements. • Shipped code to hundreds of universities and think tanks throughout the US, which was deployed to tens of thousands of users. • Led a project to transition generated documents from PCL to PDF. Emerged with an intimate knowledge of the PDF file format and specification. • Became certified in SQL Server 2000 database design.
