Senior Forensic ScientistForensic Science Service Feb 1994 - Jan 2012London LaboratoryI joined the laboratory as a Senior Research Fellow where I examined sequence variation within Short Tandem Repeat alleles at loci employed within multiplex DNA profiling systems. I then transferred to the Specialist Location and Recovery Unit (formerly the Serious Crime Unit) in 1996. My role in the SLR Unit was to provide interpretive and factual evidence on fingerprint and footwear marks both on exhibits submitted to the laboratory and at scenes of crime, particularly those composed of blood. The SLR Unit provided a year round national and international response for law enforcement agencies including the anti-terrorist branch. I provided senior investigating officers with advice on prioritising scene and exhibit examination and the need for scientist of other disciplines to attend a crime scene. I have been the lead SLR reporting officer at over 500 murder and terrorist scene of crime examinations both in the UK and abroad and many more cases submitted for examination at the laboratory and I have given evidence in court on numerous occasions. I am fully trained in selecting and labeling fingerprints and footwear marks for photography and subsequent comparison at crime scenes and in the laboratory. I provided training for other FSS scientist in the development and interpretation of finger and footwear marks in blood. I have provided SLR awareness training for crime scene managers and senior investigating officers and acted as a facilitator on the Crime Scene Managers course at CENTREX in Durham. I have initiated, and been involved in, a number of research projects since I joined the SLR Unit including the recovery of genomic DNA from human blood for PCR based profiling methods following chemical treatment for fingerprints and the development of the Multi-Metal Deposition technique for use in casework. I was also involved in developing and implementing DNA anti-contamination standard operating procedures and quality management within the Forensic Science Service.
