Michael A. “Mike” Bayer is a Professor of Life Cycle Logistics Management at the Defense Acquisition University. His duties include educating the Department of Defense’ (DoDs) cadre of life cycle logisticians, developing curricula content for both classroom and web-based presentation, as well as providing mission assistance efforts in the areas of logistics and product sustainment. He has conducted Performance Based Logistics, Depot Stand-up, Service Acquisition, and Strategic Planning workshops for program offices across the DOD, and has presented at numerous symposiums and conferences across the nation. Additionally, he is actively engaged in DAU’s research efforts.Prior to coming to DAU, he served as a Senior Logistics Analyst, providing service on-site at the Air Force Materiel Command Headquarters, responsible for providing strategic and functional support in the areas of program management support, strategic planning, analysis and assessments, business process improvement, maintenance and repair functional capability, definition and documentation, change management and systems engineering, and total cradle to grave life cycle logistics support. Prior to that, he completed a career in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 2006 from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), in Dayton, Ohio. During his tenure in the Air Force he served as an aircraft maintenance officer in the Air Force Special Operations Command where he led the support of numerous joint operations around the globe. Prior to that, he served on the Command Staff as an Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable standards, conducting mishap investigations, and developing all related local policies and procedures.
