Brookhaven National Laboratory

Serve as the Deputy for Operations / Chief Operating Officer for the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) the world's newest and brightest synchrotron light source recently completed at a cost of $1 billion, with a staff of 350 people and an annual operating budget of $110 million. The facility start-up is completed, with early operations in progress along with design, construction and installation of 28 beamlines, and the beginning of experiments by visiting scientists from around the globe. Responsibilities include oversight of all facets of operations.

Serve as an internal consultant and advisor to the senior leadership of the Laboratory on leadership and management decision-making as well as various projects and initiatives. Current assignments include managing the start-up of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS II) the Laboratory's newest accelerator facility. This newly constructed, $1Billion facility is entering the completion/commissioning phase with completion targeted for 2014. Also responsible for coordination and management oversight of SGRID3, the Lab's largest project in smart grid technology development and deployment, being conducted jointly with Stony Brook University.

Responsible for all non-science functions at BNL including Facilities & Operations, ES&H, Finance, HR, Environmental Restoration (EM) projects, IT, major construction, energy management and utility contracts management, community and stakeholder relations, and other mission support services. Responsibilities also include work on a range of leadership and management initiatives across the Laboratory’s science and support organizations.BNL is one of the DOE Office of Science multi-program national laboratories, with 3.000 employees, over 4,000 visiting scientists, and an annual budget of over $700M.

Responsible for the complete portfolio of facilities management services to a 5,300 acre site with 4 million sf of space in 350 buildings, including state of the art research laboratories and large experimental machines - particle accelerators, light source, nuclear facilities. Services provided included site planning, engineering design and project/construction management, utilities plant and distribution systems operations, maintenance and real property management, security and police operations, high tech machine shops/fabrication services, environmental remediation projects and fire department operations. Responsible for developing and supporting annual budgets over $150m and developing proposals to competitively capture construction projects in the $50-100M range.Negotiated contracts with local unions and the electric utility.

Responsible for Facilities and Operations for the BNL site - 5,300 acres, 4 million sf. Divisions included Plant Engineering, Central Shops (scientific research machine shop), Procurement, Supply and Material, Staff Services (administrative services, food service, travel, conference management, housing operations), and the Laboratory's conventional construction program. Over 500 employees and an annual budget of over $150 million.
