Principal R&D Engineer
Principal Multiphysics Engineer
My primary responsibilities are related to managing and creating simulation-based designs of proprietary small modular nuclear reactor plant processes, equipment, and safety systems. The models my team and I have created range in detail and scale from finite element analysis of individual structural equipment connections to full plant transient process modeling. Thermal/Structural Simulations• Steam and compressible gas explosions/releases• Missile impact• Detailed structural equipment connections• Vibration analysisThermal/Fluid Simulations• Single & multiphase flow• Flow through porous media• Melt flow with solidification• Equipment performance modeling (tanks, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, etc.)Atmospheric Dispersion of Pollutants• Estimated release rates and potential offsite radiological dose consequences• Accident mitigation strategies
Principal Engineer
Senior Engineer
Primary responsibilities included conducting failure analysis and providing engineering design support to clients•Designed and carried out experiments to elucidate both product failure mechanisms and performance improvements, which typically involve rapid and resourceful construction of custom test equipment and fixtures•Project work encompasses broad exposure to engineering challenges in commercial/consumer products, industrial machinery, and medical devices•Analysis and modeling techniques employed span a range of topics including multibody dynamics, fracture mechanics, thermal and fluid systems, structural mechanics/fatigue, corrosion
Research Engineer
Provided design support to a wide range of land, sea, and space-based projects including: conceptualization, analysis/simulation, mechanical drawings, both hands-on and oversight of part fabrication, and part qualification testing• Analysis topics included: structural, thermal, fluidic, dynamics, and material engineering• Projects were typically government funded with a few commercial exceptions, selected examples below o Thermal packaging solutions for high power electronic devices from the board (component/layer placement) to system level (air/liquid/phase change cooled enclosures) o Structural component design for land, sea, and space vehicle mounted systems o Satellite attitude determination and control system (ADACS) simulation o Drone design to minimize acoustic emissiono Based on doctoral work, invented system to create precision structured polymer surfaces for adhesive applications. The novel process resulted in the creation of macroscopic (30 cm) close packed arrays of microscopic (100 µm) suction cups. o Based on doctoral work, designed and fabricated remora inspired robotic systems including an underwater vehicle designed for extended deployment and soft robotic end-effectors/grasping devices
Graduate Research Assistant
My primary research activity focused on the functional morphology and operational limits of the remora fishes' adhesive disk. Based on this work, several bio-inspired devices emulating remora behavior were created.I worked extensively on chemical processing and high-temperature fabrication techniques for proprietary nickel micro-honeycomb structures. I developed models to predict their bulk acoustic properties and mechanical performance.I also designed and developed a thermal conductivity measurement apparatus for solids and highly viscous liquids. Additionally, I created numerous coupled thermal/fluid/structural finite element simulations to support design activities and developed models to predict bulk thermal properties of composites.
Graduate Research Assistant
My research focused on sustainability issues related to electronics and electronic waste with particular attention given to LCD computer monitors. The life-cycle network of LCD computer monitors including material extraction, production, consumer use, transportation, and various end-of-life options was modeled in SysML. Several end-of-life scenarios were evaluated to determine the material and energy savings that could be obtained by extending a device's life through secondary markets, and various recycling and material reclamation activities.
Co Founder
I lead development of embedded software and circuitry for distributed bike share, smart locking technology. I designed, prototyped, and tested the original circuit design.
Research Assistant
I designed, developed, and tested a casting apparatus for characterizing micro-structural properties of materials for a core undergraduate material science laboratory in addition to providing general design and fabrication services to other laboratory projects.
Intern
I assisted engineers in research, development, design, testing, and specification of ice cube makers and components. I authored ice maker capacity testing and performance specifications, and fabricated custom components for new prototypes.
Intern
I assisted engineers in the design and testing of high voltage electrical equipment, namely the 38kV CapSwitch, and various other high voltage electro-mechanical switches. I designed tooling for the manufacturing department.
Intern Cnc Programmer
I prepared solid models and created five-axis tool paths using a variety of software tools (Solidworks, Rhinocereos 3D, Powermill CAM, Master CAM).Fabrication services were provided for a diverse clientele including artists, the aerospace industry, the automotive industry, and whitewater kayak manufacturers.
