PND provided me with the opportunity to live and work in one of the most challenging environments around. I’ve been lucky enough to experience some unique events in nature while on the job; a brown bear chasing a heard of muskox, a family of polar bears playing on the beach, watching the northern lights dance across the sky in subzero temperatures. It hasn’t all been a scene out of National Geographic though, and has not come without equally unique and motivating design efforts. Behind these highlights are my more typical job tasks:• Design and analysis of various bridge types, including pedestrian and temporary bridges, with emphasis on non-composite and composite steel girders with concrete decking. • Engineering support through permitting, design, plan development, specifications, bid, fabrication, construction, and close-out.• Bottom-up cost estimating. • Development of project specifications, bid documents, quality control procedures, operations and maintenance manuals, inspection procedures and checklists. • Review of welding specifications and welder qualifications.• Acting Team Lead for routine, damage, and special inspections. • Provide condition ratings and evaluation of structural integrity.• Load ratings for various bridge and marine structures. • Detail repair procedures and retrofit design to sustain, extend the life, or increase capacity of existing structures.• Computer aided analysis and nonlinear modeling including seismic displacement-based design, pushover analysis, and fracture critical modeling

This is where it all began. My time here was short but it had the most impact on my choice of profession. This was my first exposure to bridge engineering and inspection. I was given the opportunity to crawl, climb, and hang off the most unique bridges I’ve ever seen, even now. Floating, cable stayed, and suspension bridges oh my. My primary roles included:• Assisted Team Leads with routine and underwater inspections of various bridge types.• Operated Bucket and Under Bridge Inspection Trucks (UBIT).• Interpreted construction plans/documents in order to convert bridge plans and layouts into MicroGDS format for Inspection purposes.• Composed and reviewed routine and underwater bridge inspection reports.
