About Michael Katz

Innovative structural biologist studying viral infection mechanisms with >5 years of industry experience. My MSc/PhD research (2019-2024) focused on the Lassa virus and elucidating how this lethal pathogenenters and later hijacks human cells. At the Weizmann Institute of Science, I solved the structure of thefull-length Lassa virus spike complex (along with its facilitatory enzyme) and determined the mechanism of receptor recognition (Katz et al., 2022, Nature). Outside of academia, I have worked at 3 biotechnology companies - primarily in Research & Development (R&D) and Chemistry, Manufacturing & Controls (CMC), for the characterization and purification of novel biologics. While living in the US, I developed biofuel production methods for several US government-funded projects. In the Israeli biotech sector, I designed analytical methods for a (now FDA-approved) third-generation Hepatitis B vaccine (PreHevbrio). Additionally, I optimized the downstream purification steps and carried out a stability study for bacteriophage formulations. I am currently looking for new opportunities in companies carrying out drug design and protein analysis. Project with sponsored through Phase II of the DARPA BioJet Program. I helped design a process which efficiently grows lipids via fermentation and isolates through solvent extraction. Process was scaled up to production of 8 L and further developments were proposed to increase revenue by use of co-products, such as refining of phosphatidylcholine.Worked on the Mixed Alcohol Process (MAOP) in conjunction with Terrabon Inc. by completing an overall process flow diagram for the system and comparing two possible methods for the upgrading of the ketones to hydrocarbons.
