I worked as a teaching assistant for a class of rising high school seniors at a three-week service-learning program on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.I provided academic instruction for a course on service, leadership, and community transformation, which included units on poverty and inequality, power and privilege, leadership, and civic engagement.I led students as they engaged in direct service at The Franciscan Center, advocacy at the headquarters of the Human Rights Campaign, and community-building at Banner Neighborhoods.

Chicago, Illinois

Working with the Civic Education Project of Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development, I lead a group of 7th and 8th grade students through service-learning field experiences and reflection activities around issues of social justice. In serving food and interacting with clients at the Two Li'l Fishes soup kitchen in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, my students sought to understand structural causes of homelessness. Additionally, my students worked at the Campbell Co-Op Community Garden in Humboldt Park as a way to see how local communities are working to combat issues of food insecurity.

I Served as a student teacher for 7th grade World History classes at Crestview Middle School in Huntington, Indiana, teaching lessons focusing on the geography, cultures, governments, and economies of Africa.During my student teaching experience, I completed an Indiana University Teacher Performance Assessment for a unit on Islam that emphasized the distinctions between surface and internal culture as they relate to dress.

I worked as a teaching assistant for inquiry-based learning courses on writing, law and constitutional rights, creativity, critical thinking, and the performing arts. Additionally, I acted as a counselor at the residential summer camps for academically gifted and talented students ages 9-17 on the campuses of Emory University and The University of Chicago.
