From January 2019, I have started to develop my industry knowledge and experience, completing my first six-month, full time university placement with Arup's rail track team. From July 2019, I continued to work two days per week during semesters and full time during university holidays. Working under guidance, I was able to learn through a range of activities including:• Undertaking horizontal, vertical and cant designs, using Bentley Rail Track design software. • Supporting alignment optioneering and value engineering processes, including producing sketches, memos and presentations to analyse advantages and disadvantages of different design options. • Preparing 3D models, cross sections and earthworks quantities, to communicate current alignment designs to other members of a multidisciplinary team. This included analysing 3D models received from external stakeholders. • Liaising directly with client representatives to produce collateral in support of their discussions with external stakeholders. • Providing input at multi-disciplinary and client meetings, including preparing minutes.
