• Defend the City and its employees in federal and state courts through litigation of federal civil rights, workers’ compensation, real estate, administrative appeal, motor vehicle accidents, employment law, and other various negligence and intentional tort cases • Appealed cases to the 11th Circuit and Alabama appellate courts• Negotiate, draft, and review franchises, contracts, proposed legislation, and other documents• Research and draft ordinances and legislation that effects… Show more • Defend the City and its employees in federal and state courts through litigation of federal civil rights, workers’ compensation, real estate, administrative appeal, motor vehicle accidents, employment law, and other various negligence and intentional tort cases • Appealed cases to the 11th Circuit and Alabama appellate courts• Negotiate, draft, and review franchises, contracts, proposed legislation, and other documents• Research and draft ordinances and legislation that effects the City as well as any departmental policies• Initiate lawsuits on behalf of the City • Prosecute violations of municipal ordinances in state circuit court• Perform extensive legal research and draft legal memoranda • Draft pleadings, motions, and other court related documents• Order investigations and respond to claims made against the City• Advise the Mayor, City Council, and the department heads based on the legal, employment, and policy issues, including the Alabama Ethics Law• Attend all City Council work sessions and meetings to ensure compliance with the Alabama Open Meetings Act• Teach and facilitate legal education courses at the Montgomery Police Academy and Field Training Criminal Patrol• Research and approve petitions for annexations, deannexations, and vacations • Conduct research into quiet title actions, title research, nuisance abatement procedures, and problematic property research for proposal to council Show less
