FRDC funded project to develop energy supply decarbonisation system options for Aquaculture. This project was undertaken to achieve key goals of the Australian Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC 2020 – 2025 Strategic Plan. The FRDC launched a co-investment program to “develop scalable alternative energy solutions for aquaculture” to strengthen the resilience of Australian aquaculture to a changing climate and help the sector decarbonise. Project “AquaGrid”, submitted a partnership of the Australian Ocean Energy Group (AOEG), AZURA Ocean Technology, Deloitte Emissions Group, and Syncline Energy, were selected by FRDC for project investment and are a “early mover project” within Seafood Industry Australia’s (SIA’s) overarching 3-year aquaculture decarbonisation program. Based on the energy requirements of Southern Ocean Mariculture, AQUAGrid’s aquaculture technical specialist and land-based abalone grower, the project looked beyond the single source of solar energy to design a microgrid energy system with the addition of wave energy plus storage. Project AquaGrid upheld the hypothesis and documented ocean energy’s contribution to building a reliable energy network based on the best combination of renewable energy sources (‘the sum is greater than the parts’).through detailed technical and environmental modelling developed by Deloitte.

I'm driving and communicating the global commercialisation and ongoing innovation of AZURA Ocean Technologies.Innovative offshore, low environmental disturbance, and minimal visual impact energy and water supply solutions.AZURA Dual plane Wave Energy Converter (WEC) - power supply - 60kW - 1MWAZURA Water Supply systems - 44m3 - 640m3/day of potable water In 2015 AZURA became the first Wave Energy system to be connected to the US Grid. This was part of a 2 x 12-month deployment program in conjunction with the US Department of Energy and US Navy and demonstrated the robust design and high efficiency of the system.· Continued producing during two hurricanes at 7.5m waves· Demonstrated a > 98% availability· Validated prototype and modelling efficiencies· Validated AZURA’s non-invasive mooring systemOngoing commercialisation developments have AZURA as· > 50% efficiency factor· > 98% recyclable construction· Produce potable water and/or electricity· Variable optimisation for low or severe sea states· Low visual impact· Pivoting mooring +/- 30% for directional optimisation· Sub-surface energy storageThe Azura system is a unique because it is multidirectional and harnesses power from various motions in the oceans. The AZURA system is designed in a unique way to extract power not just from the bobbing, or ‘heave’ motions of the waves, but from back-and-forth ‘surge’ motions, as well.Australian and New Zealand owned and constructed AZURA is currently commercialising and ready for project collaboration and deployment. Current projects include remote island-based ecotourism site and offshore assets decarbonisation. Our energy supply future involves combining technologies to increase generation capacity & availability, utilise transmission infrastructure, & amortise capital project costs across a wider project base.
