Michael Davis researches, writes and lectures on architectural history and conservation themes, and is a visiting lecturer at the University of Strathclyde (Architectural Conservation Masters Course).A believer in the social benefits of conserving architectural heritage, Michael argues that "the point of architectural conservation is not architectural conservation". He spoke out in favour of reconstruction of the original design during the controversy over the restoration of Glasgow School of Art. Michael has worked both as a volunteer and professionally within the conservation sector and is a past chairman of the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland and of Argyll & Bute Building Preservation Trust. His books include The Castles and Mansions of Ayrshire (1991), Scots Baronial (1997) and The Scottish Castle Restoration Debate (2014). He has also contributed to a number of academic journals and magazines, and has made appearances on television. His current concerns include misunderstandings surrounding "authenticity" in restorations, the decline of the conservation lobby in Scotland, and the decay of Scottish town centres.
