I sailed on commercial fishing vessels in the Greater Atlantic Region as a certified at-sea monitor for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). My responsibilities included:- Identifying common North Atlantic fish, marine mammals, and seabirds to document fishing activity and incidental take of protected species. For some fish, identification requires removing gill arches to count gill rakers and making abdominal incisions to view gut lining.- Measuring groundfish weights and lengths to quantify fishing catch and bycatch.- Examining fishing gear and measuring trawl codend mesh sizes to assess the effectiveness of gear regulations.- Evaluating vessel safety before every trip according to standard operating procedures.- Communicating with fishing captains and crews about NOAA fisheries regulations and the observer program.- Working on-deck at night and in foul conditions to observe fishing hauls.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, North Woodstock, Nh 03262

I spent the summer working full-time as a field technician for Dr. Matt Ayres (Dartmouth College) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. At HBEF, I helped to initiate a long-term ecology study called the "Ash Protection Experiment" (APE), investigating changes in northern hardwood forests due to the mass die-off of American ash trees caused by the emerald ash borer. I also assisted Miranda Zammarelli's PhD thesis work on ovenbird territory selection and defense. My responsibilities included:- Visually quantifying the health of 600+ ash trees to set baselines before experimental treatment.- Applying pesticide to 300+ ash trees according to integrated pest management principles.- Observing ovenbird behavior and tracking movement using ArcGIS to delineate individual bird territories.- Analyzing metadata from acoustic recordings using R to enhance collaboration with the National ParkService.- Collecting and identifying insects via malaise sampling, berlese funnels, and visual surveys.- Navigating steep forest terrain using GPS units, GIS maps, and gridded tree flagging.- Developing daily sampling plans with a field crew to maximize efficiency and safety.
