CurrentTeach Living Environment and AP Biology. Was awarded a "Five Star Bank-Wycoff Family Foundation" grant in 2009 to implement biotech materials in Living Environment courses. Became iSciWNY Liaison for the district in 2009, helping to introduce biotech careers to students.In 2015, was awarded a $10,000 "Americas Farmer Grow Rural Education Grant" from Monsanto in order to increase biotechnology education in both Living Environment and AP Biology classes. The grant allowed for the purchase of a thermal cycler, pipettors, electrophoresis apparatuses, centrifuges, and biotechnology kits, which were used in both AP Biology and Living Environment. From 2015-2016, participatedin a research study coordinated with the University of Buffalo, the Western New York Genetics in Research Partnership, and the Western NY Rural Area Health Education Center (R-AHEC) in which students used web-based genetic analysis software and electronic notebooks to analyze and determine the function and location of genes from Kytococcus sedentarius. The study's purpose was not only to annotate the genes but also to determine if exposing students to bioinformatics activities like this increase their interest in pursuing STEM careers. The study culminated with students creating professional-quality scientific posters, which they presented on June 2nd, 2016 at a Capstone Event held at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester NY.Beginning in 2021, collaborated with the University of Buffalo in a new grant which involves getting high school students in metagenomic study of bacteria found in local waterways.

Lab/Clinical/Research Tech
Started as lab technician processing blood and freezing lymphocytes for the AIDS Vaccine Evaluation Unit, then moved on to doing various assays (p24, HIV genotyping, HIV viral load) for the AIDS Clinical Trials Group. Along with others in the Demeter Retrovirology Lab, collaborated with Applied Biosystems in developing and testing their ABI 377 fluorescent sequencing kits and with Roche Diagnostics in developing and testing their Amplicor HIV-1 RT-PCR kits and modifying it for ultrasensitive assay use.Listed as co-author on two papers (See "Publications", below):Dykes C, Fox K, Lloyd A, Chiulli M, Morse E, Demeter LM.
