  • Maersk Line
    Chief Human Resources Officer
    Maersk Line Sep 2012 - Jul 2016
    Copenhagen Area, Denmark
At the time of joining the Industry was faced with sharpening reductions in growth (traditional multipliers of trade growth over GDP changed significantly), changes in trade flow with regionalisation and the shift of China to a service economy amongst other things, supply/ demand imbalance (ships order books had been based on previous growth expectations) and the fall oil prices (2014/2016). Our goal was to return to profitability and create sustainability through: 1 Creation of a Cost Leadership approach in order to leverage the benefits of being market leader2 Development of Commercial Excellence in order to reflect the new economic realities3 Simplification/ digitisation of global processes in order to reduce cost and improve our process flows to customers4 Culture/ behaviour changes to amplify a culture of Teamwork, Focus and Simplicity and ensure sustainability of the changes we were making Through the 4 year period at ML we successfully achieved the shorter term goals (achieving cumulative profitability in excess of $5.3b and significant ROIC improvements) and created platforms to enable the longer term objectives. The HR organisation that I lead successfully transformed to become lean, globalised and focused on driving the business strategy with core outcomes:1- Execution of a consistent talent strategy including assessment processes (filling 90% of necessary leadership positions internally at the most recent restructure affecting 47 locations within 72 hours)2- Development of a Leadership Development process and toolkit led by the Executive team in order to align and commit our leaders to the strategy and culture required to move the business forward (achieving 97% understanding of our strategy amongst the top 350 in the Engagement Survey of September 2015)3- Alignment of performance and rewards globally including extension of long term incentives through to all of our leadership positions.
