My current research as part of the Advance Nano-materials, Structures and Applications (ANMSA) group is developing point-of-care diagnostic devices for the diagnosis of brain trauma ranging from mild to severe. This involves the the design, building and testing of a portable Raman spectroscopy device which will be combined with a machine learning algorithm developed within the group designed to identify healthy and injured brain tissue. Raman spectroscopy produces large amounts of high resolution data in 2 and 3 dimensions, this has allowed my to develop skills in big data analysis. Working in the Clinical Computing and Imaging Science Service I was predominantly a Java web app developer, designing standard and medical device apps for use within Radiotherapy to improve efficiency and safety. This including software testing and also producing appropriate documentation. I assisted with the setup and maintenance of a newly purchased Research Picture Archive and Communication System (RPACS), liaising with the manufacturers, users and IT services to ensure it ran correctly. As a department we were responsible for medical device software and hardware within Radiotherapy and as such were also required to design cyber security measures to protect the equipment and maintain a function Radiotherapy service.Key skills: Java, SQL, data analysis, DICOM standard, project management, written communication, quality management systems, cyber security.

In this project I designed novel reconstruction algorithms, based in MATLAB, for Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy data with a view to more accurately tracking brain health after a traumatic brain injury. As well as working on computational methods, I also designed and built a prototype low cost, portable NIR spectroscopy probe using and Arduino and 3D printed parts. This roll provided the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team and also the opportunity to self directed work. As part of the project spent time working abroad collecting data in the Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering in Poland.The research resulted in 12 publications in both journals and conference proceedings, 6 of which were 1st author publications. This has helped me develop a high level of written communication skills. Results of this work were also presented internationally at conferences and at invited talks in schools and universities. This gave me experience of presenting data to people from different disciplines.

In this role I worked front of house in the climbing centre dealing with customers via phone, email and in person. I was responsible for providing novice climbers with safety briefings, teaching basic climbing skills classes and organising and delivering activity sessions for parties of adult/children.

Working within the Approved Dosimetry Service (ADS) I was part of the team responsible for the transition from a film dosimetry system to a new thermo-luminescent dosimeter system. I then progressed to calibration of personal dosimeters and hand held radiation detectors within the Instrument Calibration Service (ICS). This gave me valuable experience working within an ISO:9001 accredited quality management system.
