Dr Mike Clare leads the Marine Geosystems Research Group at NOC. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers, which focus on sediment and pollutant transport, offshore hazards, and application of novel monitoring techniques to understand threats to coastal communities and seafloor infrastructure. His research tackles questions such as the implications of future climate change for natural hazards, how new technology can be used to make direct measurements of powerful seafloor hazards, and monitoring deep-sea pollution. His research cross-cuts many disciplines and is therefore necessarily collaborative, integrating physical oceanography, geography, geophysics and geotechnical engineering. He regularly provides expert advice to a range of offshore infrastructure industries and policy-makers about threats posed by offshore natural hazards and environmental interactions with seafloor infrastructure.

Undertaking research into deep water sediment density flows, their inter-event frequency, flow transformation processes and geotechnical characterisation.

The MSA advises the ICPC on (i) understanding the marine environment, (ii) how cables, surveys, and installation may interact with it, (iii) how the industry may reduce these impacts; and (iv) help in achieving its current and future strategic goals to monitor, advise and take appropriate action.

Chair of the BSRG - the principal focus point in the UK for all aspects of sedimentological research. The group is a collection of sedimentologists from both Britain and the rest of the world.

Internal and external technical consultant working on a range of shallow to deep sea geohazards and engineering projects for oil and gas, pipeline and cable route developments worldwide.

Responsible for the technical outputs and development of the Engineering Geology and Geohazards Team, including geohazard assessments, geotechnical desk studies, detailed sedimentological studies and integrated geological reporting for offshore oil and gas, cable/pipeline routes and windfarms. Specific expertise in the area of sedimentological interpretation and creation of ground models to assist with geohazard assessments for deepwater field developments.

Engineering Geologist at Fugro supervising and setting up small to large scale on- and nearshore ground investigations. Developed expertise in detailed stratigraphic logging, including forensic post-failure investigations. Included secondment to contracts/tendering department.
