Profile bio

About Michael Coe

I am an applied ecologist and ethnobiologist. I am interested in applied ecological questions with implications for conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. My research is broadly focused on the evolutionary drivers of plant-human interactions and how they respond to environmental changes and the implications for conservation and sustainable use of natural resources (e.g., non-timber forest products) over time and space. In particular, several areas of interest include investigating the conservation implications of the ecological effects of anthropogenic activity (e.g., harvesting frequency and intensity, fire, land use change, adaptive ecosystem management), how plant population responses to anthropogenic disturbance and globalization affect future management practices, and the evolutionary drivers that influence natural resource use, selection, and management practices by human societies. My work is interdisciplinary and often combines field studies, ethnographic methods, and mathematical modeling. My recent projects have been focused on hypothesis-driven research in ethnobiology aimed at contributing to the theoretical development of the discipline and facilitating reproducible science. I have also been working on conducting harvest impact assessments of culturally and economically important non-timber forest products (NTFP) in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.Specialties: University teaching (undergraduate and graduate students), Interdisciplinary research, applied ecology, ethnobiology, ethnoecology, conservation biology, NTFP harvest impact assessments, quantitative and qualitative analyses, R.

Course Instructor

I taught a 6 week intensive graduate course entitled “Plant-People Interactions : Ethnobotany in the 21st Century” in association with The Organization for Tropical Studies, University of Costa Rica and The McKenna Academy for Natural Philosophy. This course brought in many of the top ethnobiologists and luminary figures that explore plant-people interactions worldwide to participate as guest lecturers. During this course, we highlighted the cultural diversity of the human experience and the importance of tropical ecosystems, medicinal plants, psychedelics and shamanic medicines, and other non-timber forest products to human societies that are the stewards of invaluable local and indigenous knowledge systems. In addition, we aided and facilitated student-led participatory research and enriching collaborations among a diverse student body. Participants included students from developed and developing countries including Mexico, Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany, United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, Iran, Benin, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain and Australia. Several major themes of the course were to explore hypothesis-driven ethnobiological research, fair and equitable drug discovery that directly benefits local and indigenous stakeholders, and to honor the diversity of ways of being, ways of seeing and relating to the natural world through the scientific lenses of ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology. The course emphasized interdisciplinary approaches towards understanding the significance of the biological, chemical, cultural and linguistic diversity to human societies around the globe.
