Since joining EMK Mike has been mainly occupied in delivering steam boiler training under the Combustion Engineering Association’s Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme - BOAS. He has also worked on developing the BOAS Hot Water Boiler training syllabus and the BOAS Managers’ training course. Other topics on which Mike delivers training are energy efficiency, fuel technology, gas engines, gas turbines and steam turbines, gas compressors and pumps.

NIFES Consulting Group has been a premier provider of boiler training since its formation in 1953. During his 13 years at NIFES Mike regularly presented their well-known Boiler House Management courses as well as many client-tailored courses. He has written operating procedures as well as safety rules and procedures for actual boiler plant. The training was focused on industrial/commercial boilers and their associated systems. These were mainly shell boilers producing steam at pressures up to around15 bar. Energy sources were natural gas, oil, coal, dual fuel and waste heat; the latter usually as part of combined heat and power systems. Mike’s training has also covered large water tube boilers; high, medium and low pressure hot water boilers as well as steam and gas turbines. He has also delivered training under the Combustion Engineering Association’s Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme - BOAS. Mike has also designed training on the application of Part L of the Building Regulations delivering over 30 one-day courses on this subject. He became a BRE accredited Competent Person for SBEM analysis in 2007. Mike has carried out energy efficiency surveys in industry, hospitals, retail premises, schools and colleges. He has written an Energy Saving Strategy for Local Government and Sustainable Buildings Design Codes for clients.

Le Havre, France And Formerly At Wythenshawe, Manchester

In April 1998 Mike was appointed Director of Training for Dresser-Rand European Served Area based in Le Havre, France. Responsible for formulating the company’s customer and staff training policy and directing training at all locations in the European served area. He reported to the Vice President and General Manager of Dresser-Rand Services Division Europe.From March 1991 to March 1998 he was Training Manager for Dresser-Rand (UK) Ltd based in Manchester. As a manufacturer of mechanical process plant it was company policy to ensure that those who operated and maintained D-R equipment were properly trained to do so. The principal focus was on customer training and the department operated as a profit centre with annual customer sales in excess of £500,000. The full-time teaching team was small so the post also entailed personally presenting courses, up to 50% of a trainer’s workload. Mike has also taught some courses in French. Besides running the department, much time was devoted to marketing and selling training. The work involved developing courses, devising programmes and preparing proposals for training experienced engineers and technicians. One of his most important projects while working for Dresser-Rand was the construction of the Wythenshawe plant training school.

Initially At Arzew, Afterwards At Boumerdes Near Algiers

The academic programme was under supervision of Steven’s Institute of Technology N.J. USA. Initially at Arzew, Mike taught a range of engineering subjects to senior technicians for the Algerian gas industry. Later at Boumerdes near Algiers, he specialised in teaching gas transmission and distribution to engineering students, many of whom went on to study for masters’ degrees in USA and France. He also taught postgraduates and experienced senior technicians. In both positions Mike worked in close co-operation with SONELGAZ (the Algerian national gas company). The engineering students spent their final year working in industry when they prepared a project on a specific engineering topic. He supervised these projects and was chairman of the project committee. He produced a great deal of course material, was active in laboratory work and produced a number of computer programs notably for unsteady flow, network analysis and design. On leaving Algeria Mike spoke fluent French.
