About Michael Crampton
I am currently a technical project leader (TPL) at Fuifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies in the UK. I manage the development and manufacture of API's for clients within the human and veterinary health sectors. The focus is on using recombinant DNA technologies to produce groundbreaking and industry-relevant biologics for characterisation and phase I through to phase III clinical trials. In addition we also do contract manufacturing of API's for various clients.Prior to this position I spent 20 years at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). I published a number papers in peer-reviewed journals and was granted two patents, one for developing bacterial cell surface display system and the other for developing a bacterial strain capable of secreting heterologous proteins/peptides. I also engaged and worked closely with Universities and industry to drive the development of industry viable production processes for vaccines, adjuvants and various reagents. This has led to the filing of invention disclosure and creation of technology packages/demonstrators which are in the process of being transferred to industry partners.I also managed a large team of research scientists, technologists and support staff and, on behalf of the University of Pretoria and the Technical University of Tshwane, supervised Masters and PhD students whose theses required that they do their research within our laboratories.My management responsibilities included:• Effectively leading a team of scientists and engineers • Helping develop staff and strategic human capital development (HCD) objectives • Performance management • Effective communication with and motivation of teams• Ensuring the operation, sustainable growth and robustness of the research group and ensuring that the research group remains a national leader in its field, with international recognition• Ensuring a working partnership with colleagues and key industry and higher education institutes
