About Michael Csokas
As a professional video game and children's book illustrator, author, and indie game developer, I’ve had the privilege of creating characters, worlds, and stories across a wide range of media. My journey has taken me from illustrating for scientific journals and technical oilfield manuals to crafting immersive experiences in the video game industry.I am the creator of The Broken Ceiling, a hand-drawn, 2D, top-down cosmic horror adventure game for PC, now available on Steam. The game highlights my passion for intricate character design and suspenseful storytelling. On the other end of the creative spectrum, I co-created The WEE Little Adventures of Shabu and Chow, a heartwarming children's book series that combines charming tales with vibrant illustrations.Beyond my work in games and books, I provide illustrations for oilfield manuals and scientific journals. My key clients include the American Petroleum Institute and SWAT Consulting for technical illustrations, and the National Academy of Sciences for scientific publications. This versatility has sharpened my ability to visually communicate complex ideas, whether in technical fields or creative storytelling.Currently, I am developing Working title: Omega, a new isometric cosmic adventure game that dives deep into character-driven atmospheric storytelling and further develops the hand-drawn environmental design from my previous game The Broken Ceiling. To see my most up to date portfolio please go to https://www.artstation.com/enlightened_ape

Michael Csokas work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Owner/Creative Director - Freelance Artist/Illustrator
After leaving the oilfield life behind, Iron Octopus Productions Inc. was created with the intention of fulfilling my dream of working in the videogame industry, first as an artist and then as a full fledged video game developer.
Game Developer - Video Game - Working Title : Omega
My follow up game to The Broken Ceiling. Omega is in the planning stages, preparing for prototyping.
Game Developer The Broken Ceiling Video Game
The Broken Ceiling is a hand-drawn, 2D, top-down eldritch horror adventure game. Set in deep, dark caverns, the game’s main mechanic revolves around a light field surrounding the character, which must be constantly recharged to explore the game’s hidden secrets. The Broken Ceiling took approximately seven months to produce. I designed the game to create an eerie sense of suspense and anxiety while telling a captivating story that pushes the player toward an unexpected ending. Throughout the development process, I was able to exercise project planning skills, refine game design and art, and collaborate with programmers to bring the vision to life.I also got the opportunity to work with Blair Ludwig of Bits in Flight. Honestly, I have never had a better experience working with a programmer, plus his expertise pushed the game to the next level. This game is definately a huge step towards game development on a much larger scale.
Contract Artist - Character Design/Finished Game Portrait Art - Control Alt Deal
As the game’s portrait designer and finishing artist, I created over 40 unique characters, each with dozens of swappable items—ranging from hair color and styles to portable tech, sunglasses, shirts, dresses, and earrings. The twist is that every time a new game is played, the character design is completely random, offering a fresh experience with each playthrough. Each character has over 25 items that can be changed, added, or subtracted, meaning that you will never play with the same cast of characters twice.
Oil Field Manual Technical Illustrator
Over the past four years, I’ve worked with Timothy Steffek and the American Petroleum Institute (API) to provide technical illustrations for API and their partners in the oil and gas industry. These illustrations include land, river, and sea oil spill cleanup procedures, the effects of oil on wildlife, atmosphere sampling, and protective gear. My personal oilfield experience has allowed me to collaborate smoothly with clients, ensuring the illustrations are clear and easily understood by those who will be using the manuals.
Vice Chair Of Gamecamp Edmonton
Cut Scene Artist
As part of Sovereign Syndicate's narrative, key story points were highlighted with comic book-style cut scenes. I was responsible for collaborating with the writing team to work through the story beats, developing rough panel layouts for approval, and creating the final panels. Since player choices affected the flow of the story, alternate panels were crafted to reflect these decisions. In total, over 40 pages were created, with up to 4 alternate endings for each sequence.
