Software Engineer4Dx Jul 2013 - Jan 2016As the Software Engineer for a small medical device startup, I am responsible for the development of medical imaging software for eventual approval under ISO 13485 / FDA (Title 21 CFR). This involves• development of medical CT reconstruction software, both traditional CT and CT X-Ray velocimetry using 4Dx' patented technology• design and maintenance of existing CT systems deployed at Monash University• assisting in the implementation of compliant processes and the development of compliant specifications• co-ordinating the documentation of legacy design and development work to fulfill strict medical device standards. -
Research OfficerMonash University Jan 2013 - Jun 2013During my time as a Research Officer at Monash University, I worked on a number of systems integration challenges to control a large scale X-Ray imaging laboratory. Some key outcomes from this work were: * Development of a desktop user interface that integrated multiple realtime imaging systems and X-Ray sources, including realtime image display. * Integration of timing hardware to synchronise image acquisition from multiple image detectors. * Realisation of a realtime analysis system to measure lung motion using GPU-accelerated Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). * Innovation of a phase-lock-loop based realtime identification algorithm that can predict the current phase of a respiration cycle from 2D image information, thereby allowing accurate estimates of lung expansion over a full breath. This work has supported a number of important imaging experiments, involving continuous operation over multiple days and has supported data collection for publication in a number of high-profile journals. -
Phd CandidateMonash University May 2009 - Dec 2012My thesis focused on the development of technology and capabilities that allowed, for the first time, the study of cell mechanics in a non-contact, purely fluidic environment, in a fully automated fashion. The work spanned a number of fields in engineering, and developed my skills in mechanical engineering design, electronic design, (embedded systems, PCB design) and software development. Some selected outcomes from the thesis were:• a control system simulator that combines CFD with an innovative time-stepping approach • realtime flow control system using realtime, GPU-accelerated, image analysis • a unique approach for tracking cells in noisy conditions• an advanced flow controller, combining expertise in both software and hardware, designed specifically for high bandwidth manipulation of flow in microfluidic systems. Working within the university both on my thesis and in assisting the work of the research group, I developed skills in a number of additional areas. Some of the skills developed included:• laboratory practice, including work in a PC2 (clinical) laboratory and the handling of biological samples• small scale manufacture, including CNC, manufacture of microfluidic devices, PCB manufacture and SMT assembly.• management of project budgets including the balance of risk, lead times, expenditure and development time• writing proposals and responding to reviewer feedback• planning, development, installation and management of scale-out information systems to support image analysis research. This included the management of over 40TiB of storage and liaising with university staff for assistance with design and implementation and the provision of resources. -
Project EngineerVipac Engineers And Scientists Jan 2008 - Apr 2009Brisbane, AustraliaAt Vipac, I was responsible for delivering engineering insights in the fields of acoustics and vibration to key stakeholders in the oil & gas and power industries.Working, at times independently, and at customer sites, I worked to deliver the following services:• Gathering vibration and acoustic data from industrial and commercial sites and liaising with clients to minimise the impact on operations.• Analysis of routine vibration measurements to assess machine health and make recommendations on remedial action.• Modal analysis of industrial plant to investigate potential failure modes to identify problem areas and recommend changes to improve plant reliability.• Analysis of bearing motion in large power turbines to identify operational issues that affect reliability and efficiency, leading to the development of a suite of analysis techniques. In my time at Vipac, I grew to become the Brisbane-area expert on turbine vibration analysis. -
Summer Project ScholarLatimer Acoustics / University Of Canterbury Nov 2006 - Feb 2007Active Noise Control for Preterm Infants.Working in the Acoustics Laboratory at the University of Canterbury, I conducted research into active noise control for hearing protection of preterm infants. Preterm infants have a higher occurrence of medical risk factors that necessitate specialist care. Particularly in countries with disperse populations (such as New Zealand), this can lead to emergency transportation by helicopter from regional hospitals to major hospitals, potentially causing hearing damage. In this project, I conducted research into current Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques for active noise cancellation (ANR), performed measurements of the acoustic response of a number of miniature loadspeaker drivers and microphones and developed of test apparatus for further investigations.
