Michael Czajkowski Phd Email and Phone Number
I am a soft matter physicist, kinetic sculptor, science communicator, public speaker and science policy advocate. I feel that these efforts and skills align around a central goal: engaging the public with science. I believe that the modern lag of critical thinking and science literacy is a fundamental source of disfunction in society. It is my life's goal to correct this problem and save the world from misery and disease and poverty. Ok neatMy work as a soft matter physicist has armed me with a brand spectrum of scientific knowledge, covering tangible real-world phenomena. Most of this is based on geometry, motion, collective behavior and pattern formation. I use these concepts to connect humans with the math that surrounds them and have won multiple awards for my explanations. Find me giving tours of your local telescope observatory or science museum. Also, making videos and demonstrations with Science for Georgia to teach science to all ages!At Syracuse I studied the motility of cells from a statistical physics perspective. What are the material properties of a tissue made up of cells that crawl and respond to stimuli?Fascinating questions like this arise at the interface of Physics and Biology. The answers may hold the key to the next era of bioengineering. For more, check out my website at michaelsoft.science

Director Of AdvocacyScience For Georgia Oct 2022 - PresentAtlanta, Georgia, United StatesI manage the network of advocates that Science For Georgia has gathered as we have worked together over the past three years. I work to engage this network with real current issues facing Georgia and connect each with opportunities to use their unique skills to make a real difference in science outreach and activism. I write grants to support these advocacy efforts and also create media and training material to engage the public. -

Postdoctoral Research FellowGeorgia Institute Of Technology Sep 2018 - Oct 2022Atlanta, GaI study exotic elasticity in designer materials which are able to reconfigure their shape. Such materials derive their properties from geometry alone, rather than size and composition, and therefore will become useful at all sizes, from microscopic robotics for surgery, to the unfurling of solar panels in space. -
Lead Tour GuideHolden Telescope Observatory Mar 2015 - Aug 2018Syracuse, New York, United StatesSome of the most fun I have ever had, leading audiences of all ages and backgrounds through the historic Holden Observatory. Tour guides take turns teach each participant to use the 100+ year old telescope to explore the solar system, identifying astronomical objects, and engaging with observatory-goers with custom science demonstrations in the education center.

Research In Soft Biological PhysicsSyracuse University Aug 2014 - Jun 2018Syracuse, New York, United StatesInvestigation of the physical properties and dynamics of biological tissue using geometric models. In one project, we developed a new theoretical model relating a rigidity transition with the collective motility effects in epithelial tissue. In another, we relate the motion of cells in a tissue of dividing and dying cells to the molecular motions in a supercooled fluid (i.e. a glass). -
Course Instructor For Graduate Problem SolvingSyracuse University Aug 2014 - Sep 2014This is a preparatory course for Physics PhD students preparing for the doctoral qualifying examination. Students are prepared to encounter a variety of canonical physics analytic problems across quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, statistical and thermodynamics, and electrodynamics -
Research In Lattice Quantum GravitySyracuse University Jan 2014 - Jun 2014Syracuse, New York, United StatesAnalysis of "Euclidean Dynamical Triangulation" Monto-Carlo simulations. -
Course InstructorSyracuse University Aug 2013 - Sep 2013Independently developed and administered course curriculum, lectures, homework, examinations and grading for Physics 212: General Physics II. Students are introduced to analytic undergraduate Electricity and Magnetism, including concepts of charge, Coulomb's law, Gauss's law, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, circuits, Ohm's law, Ampere's law, Ohm's law, Biot-Savart law, Maxwell's equations.
