Dr. Michael Daly is a Staff Scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, who is applying his engineering expertise to develop innovative imaging technology for cancer surgery. Since 2005, he has been a part of the Guided Therapeutics (GTx) research program at Princess Margaret, working with Dr. Jonathan Irish and a team of surgeons, engineers, physicists, and computer programmers. Together, they have built a number of novel imaging systems in the research lab and brought them to the operating room to help treat cancer patients, including devices for intraoperative cone-beam CT, surgical navigation, augmented reality, and fluorescence imaging. The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation has been instrumental in funding this research. He completed his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (Institute of Medical Science) under the supervision of Dr. David Jaffray. His thesis was on computational methods for intraoperative fluorescence quantification. He was the recipient of a Frederick Banting and Charles Best Doctoral Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). His current research involves the development of a novel deep-learning-enabled 3D fluorescence imaging system for oral cancer surgery. The goal is to provide surgeons with "tumour depth maps" based on the combination of fluorescent nanoparticles and structured illumination techniques. This project leverages Dr. Daly's expertise in biophotonics, artificial intelligence (AI), mathematical modelling, optical hardware prototyping, software development and translational research.
