Defining operational roles always seems to make some people's eyes role when trying to explain the important functions that occur daily. Where its easy to show an image with a bunch of cogs or gears turning in an effort to map a companies' infrastructure, I usually take the time to say, "operations is not simply another gear or cog in the machine, but the oil that keeps everything running smoothly." Its a dynamic, evolving, and fluid area of process, systems, and KPI reporting that is all bred from the necessity of the company.
