In January 2018, under Michael's leadership, the Western Independent Bankers (WIB) merged with the California Bankers Association (CBA) to become the Western Bankers Association (WBA).

Established in 1937, Western Independent Bankers was THE resource for community banks in the west to thrive through education and professional development. WIB's core purpose was to offer outstanding educational and leadership development and to provide superior peer networking opportunities. This was accomplished by connecting bankers, educating leaders and potential leaders, and informing various generations of the bank. Prior to the merging with the CBA, WIB had more independent bank members than any banking association in the West. The WIB served 13 Western states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and US Territories.As the CEO of the WIB, lead the strategic and financial direction of the association and within 12 months of taking the position, re-engineered the non-profit business model to realize significant cost saves and revenue enhancements. Significantly enhanced the member value proposition for vendors and bankers alike.
