Profile bio

About Michael Denison

Growing up as a percussionist, I always wondered why certain instruments would sound better than others. What made the ‘nice’ snare drum better than the ‘cheap’ snare drum? Why did better technique in striking a marimba bar result in a more full and pleasant sound? Why did performances in a well designed sound hall sound better than when I rehearsed in a small practice room? I took these questions with me as I studied at Brigham Young University, where I learned the fundamental principles and mathematical concepts of acoustics. I was pleased to learn how different physical properties of an object would affect how something vibrates and, as a consequence, what type of sound it produces. Later, I learned how sound travels in air and through solids and how a room should be designed for ideal listening experiences. As an undergraduate researcher, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to assist in taking hundreds of measurements of musical instruments, with the goal of better understanding how sound is emitted from each instrument. This project helped me appreciate how subtle differences between musical instruments can result in substantially distinct acoustic qualities and the importance of maintaining a high standard of data recording quality and analysis. In graduate school, I embarked on an interesting study of focusing sound in rooms. I learned as much as I could about room acoustics, digital signal processing, sound source characteristics, and data acquisition strategies. I enjoyed taking what I learned and sharing it with other students as a teaching assistant, acoustic lab facilitator, and president of the Acoustics Research Group. After graduating with a master’s degree in physics with an emphasis in acoustics, I began working at Sandia National Laboratories in the Vibration and Acoustics Simulation Group. I am pleased to put my skills and experience to good use in an excellent and diverse team of engineers and technologists. Together, we tackle challenging problems with the goal of supporting national interests.I am still a percussionist at heart, with many drums and other instruments to play. I also enjoy cycling, camping, hiking, woodworking, volunteering, home improvement, and being a father and husband.

Listed skills include Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Research, and 6 others.

Collaborate with a team of design engineers by providing mechanical acoustic, vibration, and climatic environmental testing. Utilize large loudspeakers, electrodynamic shakers, and climatic chambers to recreate real-world dynamic conditions for full systems, subassemblies, and components. Work with a diverse group of engineers and technologists to ensure excellent test practices are being followed and to validate results. Collect data from calibrated precision sensors such as microphones, accelerometers, and thermocouples. Analyze the data using digital signal processing techniques to compute useful quantities, such as: auto and cross power spectral densities, transfer functions, nth octave sound pressure levels, signal correlations, shock response spectra, etc. Provide stakeholders with clear and accurate reports that describe test setup documentation, results analysis, and design recommendations. In addition to my roles in day-to-day environmental testing, I also participate in research and development groups to advance acoustic and vibration testing and analysis capabilities. I have implemented multiple input acoustic and vibration techniques for improved overall dynamic response. I maintain contracts with university researchers to develop time-reversal signal focusing techniques to increase acoustic testing efficiency. I characterize material properties using ultrasonic test methods. I implement non-contact measurement technologies such as scanning laser doppler vibrometry for vibration and ultrasonic analysis. I have measured the acoustic response of loudspeakers in an anechoic chamber and firearms at a test range.
