Very varied CV. I speak fluent Spanish and native English and have lived and worked in Peru, Venezuela and the Canary Islands (plus Japan). Recent 21 years as Senior Lecturer in Latin American Politics and Spanish have meant I have published two monographs/books on Venezuela together with several journal articles and book reviews on the same topic. As a result I have given several interviews on TV (RT, TRT, Sky News, BBC, Deutsch Welt, France 24) and radio (Radio Netherlands, PBS, Korea TV/Radio, BBC regional) and to the press. I have delivered papers at conferences and public meetings and attended receptions at the Venezuelan Embassy in London. Crucial to this expertise has been a substantial amount of primary and secondary research both at home and abroad. As an importer/retailer I have represented the Spanish Embassy Commercial Department at the International Food Bloggers Conference in London and the Andalucian Foreign Trade Office at International Food Fair in London. I also have extensive purchasing and sales experience both retail and wholesale, experience of international transport and warehousing, and am a registered importer with EORI number. While living and working in the Canary Islands I also imported and retailed handicrafts from Peru and Ecuador in addition to having my own radio show (the Michael Derham Show) on Radio Volcan the local subsidiary for Spanish national broadcaster Antenna 3. I have international experience as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language in Peru, Japan, Canary Islands and in England with an MA in Language Teaching and Learning. In 1987, I left the construction industry where I was a site supervisor/piping foreman for Babcock Construction Ltd, in order to study for a university degree at Liverpool University. At Babcocks I also had experience as a materials controller with planning, warehousing and transport responsibilities in addition to running a drawing office and contract draughtsmen. I had worked for the same company through various transformations (from British Steel, Pipework Engineering Developments to Babcock PED then Babcock Construction) since 1975 at various locations across Britain. I was also QA/QC Manager for RH Irving Industrials at the Langeled Pipeline Terminal at Easington, Yorkshire in 2008. Prior to 1975 I had worked as a bricklayer (and again briefly while a student in the 1990s together with factory work, bar/kitchen work and English and Spanish teaching), in a car factory, casual labouring work, tax advisor and four years as a Tax Officer in the Inland Revenue.
