As of now I'm searching for a full time job in a career that will allow me to pursue my passion for mechanical and nuclear problem solving. Over my last two years at VCU my knowledge of the nuclear industry has grown substantially, and with it so has my interest. At VCU I pursued more in the nuclear industry by working as an undergraduate researcher, and this is where I took part in some great learning opportunities. During this time I spent two weeks at Oak Ridge National laboratory, learning all about nuclear research, and as a researcher I used Monte Carlo simulations to perfect a method for cyclical irradiation of a target to produce desired Isotopes. One of my biggest strengths is my ability to learn quickly. During my research I was able to learn several data collection techniques, and formulate my own experiments with software packages. These experimental results were compiled into several presentations and reports given on my research findings. I’m thankful for all of these past opportunities in the research field, however it's not what I want to do with my career. The knowledge I gained during my research carried over into my senior design project, where I am the team lead and MCNP lead. This senior design project focuses on the analysis of different fuel compositions for pebble bed high temperature gas cooled reactors. My role is to keep the team on schedule to meet all deadlines and ensure quality of all deliverables. I am also in charge of performing all of the neutronics analysis with use of MCNP. Over the years my hobbies have shaped me into the person I am today. Beginning with 3D printing, I would obsess over designing parts and mechanisms in Solidworks and Fusion 360 to print and build. Things like gearboxes to motorize riding toys for nieces and nephews, or repairing and repurposing small engines, or electric motors to make remote control boats, planes, and cars. I’ve undoubtedly spent hours on these projects, looking over part files, or tinkering in my garage. Through all of it I’ve learned how much I love mechanical problem solving, and I’ve developed a strong sense of perseverance, because no project works perfectly the first time.
