Since June 2022, Dr. Michael Severino has served as CEO of Tessera Therapeutics, a company developing gene writing technology based on the biochemistry of mobile genetic elements, and a CEO-Partner of Flagship Pioneering .Prior to joining Tessera he was Vice Chairman and President of AbbVie, responsible for research and development, corporate strategy, and business development. He previously served as Executive Vice President, Research & Development and Chief Scientific Officer of AbbVie. Prior to joining AbbVie in 2014, Dr. Severino was Senior Vice President, Global Development and Chief Medical Officer at Amgen, Inc. During his time at Amgen, he served in roles of increasing responsibility across a broad range of therapeutic areas including oncology, inflammation, neuroscience, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Dr. Severino serves on the Board of Directors for Avantor and the Board of Trustees for the Field Museum. At AbbVie, he is the executive chair of the Black Business Network Employee Resource Group. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park and a doctorate in medicine from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. Dr. Severino completed his residency and fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
