Michael leads Invenergy’s Central and Western Canada team, including development of regional strategy, execution plan, and team mentorship, related to utility scale generation/capacity projects. Using his knowledge of provincial electrical utilities, markets, and system need, Michael implements the strategic growth and advancement of the company’s project portfolio in the region, ultimately preparing mature, de-risked projects. Working directly with Invenergy’s origination, finance, engineering and procurement teams, Michael oversees the development of project financial models that meet target returns and collaborates with appropriate Invenergy teams to prepare bids in response to requests for proposals. Michael collaborates directly with senior leadership to build consensus on strategic decisions for the region related to commercial agreements, budgets, staffing, offtake opportunities, and issue resolution. For the early-stage project pipeline, Michael undertakes siting due diligence efforts and secures landowner agreements (e.g. options to lease/purchase). He is responsible for coordinating with a diverse team of Invenergy technical specialist and external consultants to advance mid and late-stage projects. As acquisition opportunities emerge, he contributes to project due diligence tasks to assess the viability of, and appropriate commercial terms for, assets being considered. During all stages of project development, but particularly for later-stage projects, Michael works with the legal team to negotiate partnerships and commercial agreements, including with First Nations and Métis. Michael is responsible for Invenergy landowner, First Nation and stakeholder engagement for the region’s projects, and collaborates with Invenergy’s communication and government affairs teams to understand challenges and opportunities. Through listening, dialogue and inputs received, Michael develops pathways for positive experiences and outcomes.

I led a team of environmental practitioners with expertise in regulatory permitting and approvals ranging from linear development (e.g. transmission, roads), land development, mining, ports and terminals, species at risk, and energy generation facilities (e.g. renewable energy, natural gas). The team specialized in the collection of baseline environmental data (wildlife, wildlife habitat, fish, fish habitat, benthic invertebrates, wetlands, plants, vegetation community and arboriculture) as well as undertaking strategic studies related to natural heritage systems planning and master plans. As the Ontario business leader, I regularly worked with clients to understand their needs and collaborate with them to identify strategies which protect their development schedule and reduce permitting costs. I was fortunate to have led or participated in Indigenous, regulator and public engagements.

I led a team of seventy (70) natural scientists (e.g. wildlife, wetland, vegetation, aquatic, agrology) across Canada. As part of the talent management executive team, I was responsible for setting and implementing the strategic direction for technical development, skills training, hiring of staff, and overall growth of the technical service capabilities of the team. In collaboration with regional operation teams, I worked to ensure local teams had the staff and technical knowledge to deliver on key corporate priorities and client needs.

I led an experienced multi-disciplinary team of natural scientists, planners and engineers who were involved in the development of 10 gigawatts of renewable energy facilities in Canada and internationally. As part of the business development executive team, I was responsible for identifying and implementing corporate fiscal targets, achieving revenue targets, allocating marketing budget and assigning technical teams to projects or proposals. The position was responsible for building the Dillon brand in the market place, client facing meetings and functions, maintaining and building client relationships, securing revenue backlog, developing future business opportunities and monitoring team execution of tasks.

Specific tasks included working with the client to determine their needs, develop innovative scopes of work, develop/manage a high functioning team to deliver quality work that achieved regulatory compliance and deadlines, building trust, and diversify the professional services provided.

Project Manager Position: I managed the full project lifecycle of a variety of project types (e.g. municipal environmental impact studies, natural heritage studies, master plans, provincial/federal environmental assessments) from the initial proposal through to project close. It required a comprehensive understanding of infrastructure specific regulatory approval processes and relevant legislation covering multiple jurisdictions (e.g. federal, provincial, and municipal) including multiple provinces and territories in Canada. Through project work, I have many years of both leading and supporting stakeholder engagement with the public, regulators, effected landowners, and Indigenous groups. I have also been fortunate to work directly with Indigenous groups with skills capacity building. Field Biologist Position: I have a specialty in terrestrial biology, including survey protocol, study design and identification of, birds (i.e. sight and sound), mammals, amphibians, reptiles and vegetation. My background focuses on ecosystem level mapping of wildlife habitat and assessing wildlife habitat suitability. I have carried out field surveys throughout Ontario, Alberta, select areas of Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan and internationally (i.e. Saudi Arabia). I have extensive knowledge assessing environmental impacts, mitigation, residual effects, monitoring needs, and contingency measures, for a variety of infrastructure types and regulatory regimes.

Ottawa, Canada Area

I conducted the validation of a herring gull (Larus argentatus) bioenergetic and toxicokinetic model through a priori simulations in collaboration with the Head of Chemistry for the National Wildlife Research Centre. During this work, I completed a review of existing scientific literature related to Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP) contaminants and collected datasets for historical fish populations in the Great Lakes. Dataset quality was controlled through assessment of POP chromatography outputs and concentration results on a wet and dry weight basis. Statistical evaluations were undertaken and prepared for use in the manuscript. Draft of key portions of the manuscript were prepared for review by the lead author and ultimately submitted for publication in a peer reviewed journal.

Port Rowan, Ontario, Canada

I managed the bird migration and breeding bird research being conducted at two migration-monitoring research stations along Lake Erie. I was responsible for training and supervising up to 20 volunteer and staff field biologists at a time. The work involved undertaking field investigations following specific protocols, training of staff, logistics planning for rotating staff, field data input into digital forms, equipment inventory, and maintenance of the facilities (e.g. boats, ATVs, residences) and the logistics for revolving staff.
