Owner/OperatorMike’S East Side Dance Studio Feb 1977 - Nov 1978Honolulu, HawaiiIn Hawaii, the 70’s Disco movement created a demand for people wanting to learn how to Disco dance.Because of my love of dancing, my girlfriend and I signed up for Disco lessons at a local Academy of Dance. When we walked into the studio for our first lesson, it was jam packed wall to wall with over 100 people!During my dance lessons that day, I realized how much of a demand there was for Disco lessons. Right after that first lesson I said to myself: “Look at all the people wanting to learn Disco! What an opportunity to make money and have fun as well! I can do this!” The very next day I found and hired dance instructors, and located a space to rent for just $25 a week, to provide the Disco lessons. I then placed my ads, and within a week, Mike’s East Side Dance Studio was born! Every week I would go dancing at the many different Honolulu Disco Night Clubs. It was such a thrill to see so many of the people that took Disco instructions at my Dance Studio, dancing and enjoying themselves at the Night Clubs. The Disco movement peaked in 1978-79, and rapidly faded in 1980. By the fall of 1978 the demand for Disco lessons was petering out, so I closed the Dance Studio in November of 1978.It was a blast while it lasted! Having the opportunity to help hundreds of people learn and enjoy dancing, was a pleasure and thrill for me.

Sold them directly to tourists at a shop I had in the lobby of the Waikiki Outrigger Hotel, & wholesaled them to local & mainland retailers. Puka means ‘hole’ in Hawaiian. Puka shells are created when the Cone Shell dies & brakes down by wave action over many years to where , eventually only the top of the Cone Shell remains, & has now lost its center core, which becomes the 'hole' in the center of the Cone Shell top: Nature’s PUKA SHELL! I expanded beyond Puka & Paper shells, into importing shells & shell products of all types from various Islands in the Pacific, that I sold retail & wholesale to Hawaii & the mainland customers. Initially, I personally collected Puka shells from Oahu’s beaches. Then as the demand rapidly increased due to the world wide ‘craze’ that was developing, I had to collect many hundreds of Puka shells daily, by paying numerous people that lived near the beaches to collect the shells for me, purchasing every shell they could collect. I had to set up a mini-factory in my home, where I had a dozen people sorting the shells by color, size, shape, & stringing them into necklaces for sale. Due to the worldwide demand, & as the collecting of shells from the surface of the beach as they washed up with the tides every day became scarce, West Oahu beaches literally became mines, whereby local collectors were digging holes several feet wide and deep covering entire areas of some of the beaches, until the government came in & stopped them. Because of the continued growing demand, I spent many weeks sending out Puka shell samples to many areas of the Pacific, in hopes of finding a foreign source of the shells.
