I’m a researcher and founder dedicated to speeding up transition to a fair, low-carbon energy system. My approach combines research rigor with creative solutions that engage users, foster collaborative working, and capture wider stakeholder and public interest. I’ve worked in sustainability for over 15 years, first in commercial publishing, then in research at University College London. My career has taken in work in Government (on secondment at BEIS), Parliament, and on consultancy projects with organisations like Smart Energy GB and Citizens Advice. I'm currently on part-time secondment to Nesta.Alongside this I’ve built a stream of creative sustainability projects, including audio art (exhibited in the Wellcome Collection) and developing Augmented Reality heat pump test drives (as part of my project pump:chic). Increasingly I’ve sought to draw these into my research practice – examples of projects I’ve co-built include Should I Bake? (which let’s bakers know when there are high levels of renewable generation on the grid) and Watts the Deal?, the P2P energy trading board game.Through this work I’ve developed experience in methods that sit at the interface of research and innovation. These include user centred design and agile project management, and Theory of Change. I’m also adept in social research approaches such as interviews and social surveys, evidence synthesis, and interdisciplinary working. I contribute to thought leadership through influential work on flexibility in energy use (particularly through the concepts of flexibility capital and justice) and energy services. I’ve been a researcher co-investigator on £multi-million projects, as well as project managing multiple smaller projects, leading teams, and managing staff and students. My work at UCL also takes in teaching (supervision, lecturing, and case-based approaches), and I’m a regular public speaker and workshop facilitator.
