Over the past 6 years I have been placed in numerous roles while working at City Beach. Throughout my employment I have been able to learn valuable skills in areas such as: managing stores and delegating jobs to colleagues, cash handling, customer service and stock work. Working with City Beach over the years has allowed me to develop my retail skills which makes me comfortable working with new people and dealing with conflict in a professional way.A lot of the skills that I have learnt and developed during my experience at City Beach will be transferrable in the engineering industry.

The company has given me an insight into the design and consultancy associated with an engineering business. In my time working there I have been able to hone my CAD skills utilising SolidWorks and Pro Engineer. I aided in the generation and review of reports and drawings for a job involving the blast containers for a BP site with clients ‘Crier Wolf’. The task involved conducting checks on safety requirements to highlight violations to the safety standards and suggesting methods for their repair.My experience was conducted on a once per week basis during the final months of my degree, which highlights my ability to manage time and study to a high quality, as well as my eagerness to gain experience in the industry.

My experiences in the sugar industry gave me exposure to the high levels of safety protocol of on-site factory and mining trades. My confident use of PPE, isolation equipment, safety courses and consistent risk management tasks, show my high levels of adaptability and drive to apply myself to a given task. I aided in the collaboration and preparation of project proposals for major overhaul tasks. This included CAD deliverables, whereby plan view and isometric drawings were provided by myself, to support the front end loading (FEL2). I produced the material procurement and costing estimation spreadsheets, as well as modelling and testing the system on the ‘Pipe Flow Expert’ software package.Design of a pump motor base via CAD software to resist the load conditions, minimise cost in materials and manufacturing, and comply with both company and Australian standards. Using AutoCAD and Inventor, a list of designs were proposed to the project engineers and my supervisor for criticisms and (where necessary) redesign in an iterative process which saw a final design accepted before my departure. I enjoyed my work experience as it gave me a great insight into what is expected of an engineer as well as the lessons and people I was exposed to. Being able to put the knowledge I have gained at university into a practical sense was very beneficial to me. I hope to continue to display and grow my knowledge of this wonderful field within an established company.
