The Synthesis Team at Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Austin, TX provides a wide array of synthetic raw materials used in various products throughout the larger organization. The NOCS (nucleotide organic chemistry synthesis) team has been combined with the Protein team in order to offer a full range of synthetic expertise from nucleotides to enzymes. Under my new role, I take the position of technical lead for dNTP manufacturing where I am responsible for daily operations and manage a small production team. I am a knowledge leader and trainer for lipid synthesis and formulation. In addition, I have been trained in the manufacturing of USDA and FDA regulated genetic sequencing reagents.

The NOCS (Nucleotide Organic Chemistry Synthesis) team at Thermo Fisher Scientific Austin is responsible for a wide variety of organic synthesis, such as dNTPs, BDTs, and Lipids. Being in the regulated network of the Life Solutions Group (LSG), our manufacturing lab is one of the few GMP & ISO certified labs in the United States. We are a highly innovative and specialized team compromised of individuals with diverse scientific backgrounds, which positions us to overcome daily production tasks and interruptions efficiently. We rely heavily on various high performance chromatography systems and utilize heavy equipment such as large glass reactors and rotovaps. The extent of our analytical capabilities are extensive: HPLC, HPIC, UPLC w/CAD, UV, FLD, MS, LC-MS, FPLC (GE AKTA Pilot/ Purifiers), and more. This positions us to reproducibily deliver quality products to our customers and optimize current processes.

The CRNA oligo manufacturing team at Life Technologies (Austin) is responsible for the synthesis, purification and testing of a wide variety of oligonucleotides for use in microRNA analysis, mRNA silencing, and other molecular biology research. Our team is dynamic and fast paced, relying on teamwork, multitasking and communication within the team and the larger organization. Being a specialist in manufacturing and quality control testing, we follow SOPs and work in compliance with EH&S, SOX, ISO and any other required manufacturing or company systems (e.g. SAP, LIMS, CRO, DR, etc.) Under direct and indirect supervision, we are responsible for generating high quality products; identify and address quality issues and report to supervisor any possible deviation to approved processes. We also possess the ability to use and troubleshoot processes in daily duties and participate in collateral activities such as Kaizen, 5S, cycle counting, etc.

The overall scope of my research as an undergraduate assistant consisted of determining whether expression of the calcium subunit, alpha-2 delta-2 was different in wild type and fmr1 knockout mice. During this process I became familiar with many scientific investigative methodologies and worked under the supervision of Kimberly Raab-Graham in the Department of Neuroscience (Center for Learning and Memory).
