As a member of the Management Board, Ambassador Michael Gerber heads the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation's International Programmes and Organisations department. He leads the Swiss delegation to the CERN Council, and has been Switzerland’s Chief Negotiator on the new EU Programme Agreement.From 2018 to 2023 he was head of the Dublin, Stay and Resettlement Division at the State Secretariat for Migration. Before, Michael Gerber was Ambassador and Special Envoy for Global Sustainable Development, appointed by the Swiss Federal Council in 2012, entrusting him to lead Switzerland’s engagement in the international processes of the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development as chief negotiator and coordinator. Prior to that position, he was Head of Policy in the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). In this function, Michael Gerber was responsible for positioning Swiss development policy and leading key strategic processes, as well as SDC's research partnerships and programmes.From 2006 to 2009, he was responsible for the Swiss development programmes in Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. While serving in this function, he completed the post-graduate Programme on Developing Countries (Centre for Development and Cooperation, NADEL) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.Michael Gerber joined the Swiss Confederation in 2002, as Head of Communication for SDC’s Domain Bilateral Cooperation and later Programme Manager for Ecuador. Before, he pursued several project assignments in Ecuador, Colombia and Mexico.Michael Gerber holds a MA in Political Philosophy, Ethics, History and Social Anthropology of the University of Bern. From 2009, he has repeatedly served as a lecturer at the Universities of Zurich and Bern, in recent years mainly on the topic of Sustainable Development. In July 2023 he will graduate from the EMBA X programme at ETH and University of St. Gallen.
