After nine years as a software engineer and a side trip to law school I finally found my niche working with low latency systems for the financial industry. I enjoy working on high performance systems because it makes every little thing I do more difficult. “As fast as possible” is an unfinishable task, so I just look at it as a race and try to beat everyone who isn’t on my team.In most of my earlier development work performance was never much of a concern, and after eight years of it I was bored. I decided to go back to school, and after thinking about it a while and discussing it with a few family members I settled on law school. I figured IT/MBAs were common, lawyers with a programming background were rare, and the lawyers in my family felt their profession really needed more attorneys with computer expertise. After the housing crash of 2008 ruined the job market for attorneys I was unable to obtain a position that sounded better than writing code, so I went back into IT.

The original document set we had to search was 500GB, mostly composed of email and MS Office documents. I developed software to identify likely matches and built a database application to keep track of them.
