About Michael Granger, Ph.D.

I serve the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) as our Associate Director of Research Development. I am a professional program manager, research administrator, and scientist with experience building and leading cross-functional teams that span commercial/ industrial, US-government, and academic sectors.The scope of the projects and programs I have supported and led ranges from basic science, chemical-analysis, in vitro diagnostic devices, and cancer research to AI/ ML-driven digital twin technologies, and teleoperated and autonomous robotics. My roles have been that of administrative lead, Principal Investigator, and faculty support. While at the University of Utah, I have overseen and supported several cancer-focused grants and worked closely with researchers from the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Nano Institute of Utah, and departments of Psychiatry, Surgery, and Chemical Engineering. My professional experience includes identifying opportunities; defining projects; securing and overseeing funding; coordinating scope; leading cross-functional teams; managing cost, risks, dependencies, shareholders, and schedules; and deploying new products. I have expertise working within waterfall and Agile product development and life cycle management environments and am experienced in defense-related government contracting.     The prevalence of mass spectrometry in the bioanalytical and clinical arenas is well founded; the technique is particularly well suited for applications where identification and quantification of biologically important analytes are critical. This is particularly true in the field of metabolomics. However, many analytes undergo uncontrolled redox chemistry when subject to conditions necessary for ionization. In recognition of this fact, I worked closely with colleagues at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in an effort to develop a solution. The culmination of the work was an in-source porous emitter electrode controlled by an electrically floated potentiostat, which minimized unwanted analyte reduction or oxidation.
