On assignment from Bell Labs to AT&T Network Systems. Design and marketing of smart phone concept until phone funded in AT&T Consumer Products and service platform in AT&T Network Systems. Functional product requirements for the AT&T Smart Phone 2100. Reviewed and approved Consumer Products' revisions. Managed continued phone and service prototyping work for design evaluation in the Consumer Lab and preparation of print and video marketing materials.Market management in telecommunications, banking and retail industries.

Product Line Architecture Group. The first group setting long-term direction across all operations systems offered by AT&T to public telephone networks. Specified the Universal Operations Systems logical architecture, interlayer data flows and protocols, database architecture, and user, network, and gateway interfaces. Continued personal work on smart phone, including collaboration on design prototypes and a draft business prospectus.

User Interface Design Group. Design, development, lab and field testing of user interfaces to the Mechanized Loop Testing System (MLT-2).Proposed and prototyped the Craft Access Terminal in 1981 and supervised architecture, requirements, and human factors. Used by telephone company installers and repair technicians to obtain records, dispatch information and test results on a small LCD, the CAT was handheld, rugged, and simple to operate; the most widely-used combined voice and data terminal for over a decade with over 75,000 sold.Proposed touch screen smart phone concept and initial design in late 1982.

Human Factors Department. Requirements, design, and evaluation of user interfaces and implementing interface prototypes for new business and residence services including Advanced 800, Dial-It, System 85 system management, and Custom Calling II features of the 1A Voice Storage System.

Taught and supervised research in perception, learning, and real-time computing. Designed and built software and hardware for laboratory and instructional computing. Chaired the state-wide University Computing Committee.
