As a Contract Engineer at a road marking and highway safety company, I manage up to 12 crews across multiple sites daily. The position includes coordinating and scheduling work being carried out on the trunk roads across Scotland. My role is to manage the crews in such a way that the work is completed, on time, on budget, and to the high standard that the client expects. Safety is paramount in my current role, there are many risks that need to be evaluated on a site-by-site basis. To minimise these risks, I am responsible for ensuring that all employees are familiar with the standard operating procedures that are relevant for each task.Key aspects of my role as Contract Engineer at WJ:• Planning / scheduling work depending on the needs of the client and ensuring that this is carried out in the most efficient way. • Coordination of operations across multiple sites daily by delegating tasks to the chargehand of each crew.• Encourage team members to develop their skills whilst providing guidance and support in gaining further professional qualifications. • Motivating crews to deliver high quality work on time.• Manage and lead crews to ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and compliant with Chapter 5 of the Traffic Signs Manual.• Carrying out weekly audits on site, championing safety, standards and quality.• Being reactive to the fast paced and unpredictable nature of each project, making important decisions whilst under pressure.• Build and maintain strong relationships with all of our clients and customers, including local authorities and subcontractors.• Seek continuous improvements and streamlining of processes to maximise efficiencies and eliminate waste.• Create reports for clients and senior management to provide up to date information regarding progress of work.• Taking responsibility for the outcome of the work. E.g. quality/ schedule/ cost. • Providing out of hours support for crews working overnight, being first point of contact to address challenges and resolve issues faced on site.
