Dr Michael Hand is a Specialist General Practitioner in Melbourne. He grew up in country NSW, spent 10 years in Sydney, then traded a career in engineering for one where you get to feel a more tangible sense of helping people on a daily basis. Completing his medical training through the Deakin University Rural Clinical School in Warrnambool, Michael then moved to The Northern Hospital in outer Melbourne before fulfilling his long-term goal of completing GP Specialty training through the RACGP.Becoming a new father during his GP training time, Michael became aware of the urgent need for improving the employment conditions of GP Trainees at a time when fewer and fewer junior doctors are choosing to join the specialty.Michael strongly believes that addressing the current leave and pay disparities between GP Trainees and their Hospital Trainee colleagues will provide an urgent boost in GP Trainee numbers to help tackle the looming shortfall of thousands of GPs across Australia. Michael is a member of the AMA’s GPs in Training Advisory Committee.
