  • Iowa State Formula Sae
    Data Acquisition/Active Aerodynamics Engineer
Iowa State Formula Sae Jul 2015 - Jun 2016
My responsibilities were to look over the test data coming from our wheel speed sensors, shock potentiometers, accelerometers, gyros, steering angle sensor, brake pressure sensors, engine rpm, coolant temp sensor, lambda sensor, and intake air temp sensor in order to determine the effectiveness of different car subsystems. Through creating math channels and histograms, the data was used to help both car and driver perform at their peak potential.I also worked on implementing an active-aero system to the wing flaps on the front and rear of the 2015-2016 Formula SAE car at Iowa State University. After using AIM Data-logging software and computational fluid dynamics to determine the potential gains of using an active-aero system, I created an interface from our real-time data logger to a controller in order to determine through data inputs when the car is on a straightaway. When the conditions hold true, the signal is sent to the controller and interpreted through a script, which then triggers the servos to move the wing flaps. The system is fully integrated to run on 12V from the car, provides drivers with a manual override switch should they prefer to trigger the system themselves, and weighs less than 2lb.
  • Iowa State Formula Sae
    Technical Director
Iowa State Formula Sae Jul 2014 - Jun 2016
As Technical Director for the Iowa State Formula SAE team, it was my duty to manage a fifteen person team with a $20k budget to create an open-wheeled formula style race car on a one year turnover. I was tasked with the approval of all designs for performance and manufacturability and granted the power to have the final say in all design and manufacturing aspects of the car. In the design aspect of our season, I coordinated with all of our subsystem leaders to gather a game-plan for our season: what is feasible, what worked/did not work in previous years, and what everyone would like to do. After our decisions are made, it was my duty to orchestrate meetings with certain subsystems in effort to determine how our goals would be accomplished, and discuss with the other subsystems that may be affected by a new change. Once in the designing process, I set the deadlines for certain designs to be completed for manufacturing, and made sure our design changes were implemented as smooth as possible. It was also my job to assist every subsystem when extra help was required to design, calculate, simulate, and/or finish before our deadlines. I have personally designed numerous parts to be milled, turned, welded, bent, 3D printed, and have performed numerous simulations in Solidworks FEA and ANSYS.During manufacturing, it was my duty to make sure all parts were made to spec and get on the car smoothly. It was also my duty to teach all the subsystem leaders that knowledge so they are able to do the manufacturing approval themselves. If a manufacturing change was required, it was my job to approve the change in order to have a system function effectively, without sacrificing performance. I was also tasked with teaching new members how to safely use all of the machinery in the shop.
  • Iowa State Formula Sae
    Chassis Team Leader
Iowa State Formula Sae Aug 2013 - Jun 2015
As Chassis Team Leader, it was my responsibility to design and manufacture a high performance steel tube space frame racing chassis. The frame had to not only perform up to standards, but also smoothly incorporate all other racing subsystems. Special emphasis was placed on roll stiffness and minimizing deflection where suspension components were mounted, allowing for the car to perform as close to simulation as possible, thus making the vehicle dynamics more predictable. Close collaboration was necessary with all subsystems to ensure efficient packaging and performance was achieved. Throughout my time as team leader, the chassis was modified to comfortably accommodate drivers of all sizes (5th percentile female to 95th percentile male), the rear third was redesigned for better suspension travel without sacrificing stiffness, the engine mounting was updated to direct mount rather than a bolt-in engine cradle, the frame became 10% lighter and 20% stiffer, and the frame was reconfigured for the addition of an aerodynamics package.
  • Iowa Mold Tooling Co., Inc.
    Product Development Intern
Iowa Mold Tooling Co., Inc. May 2015 - Aug 2015
    Garner, Ia
As Product Development Intern, I was responsible for exploring options of how to reduce weight, simplify products, and reduce product cost in the telescoping crane series. My duties lead me to perform FEA simulations on assemblies in effort to standardize weldments in cranes of close load ratings. These simulations were also used in order to test experimental booms with either unique or differently sized cross-sections. Valid results were then put into projects for physical testing. Other duties included processing numerous ECNs in effort to smooth the process of manufacturing, or to reduce internal cost, and also testing slewing rings from suppliers for fatigue, cracking, and/or deformation.
