Yes I really am in the Atikokan/Thunder Bay area trying to realize a pretty intense project: starting an Independent School at the former Conference Centre known at Quetico Centre. It's a beautiful piece of property: over 100 acres meandering over 1 km of shoreline. The property was abandoned for a few years, so it's taken some work to bring the place back to life. Now the hard job begins: attracting students to the type of school that you wish you could have gone to. With the background in looking after BMX events and parks in the City of Toronto, building an action sports park was at the top of my list. That sport will become an integral part of what will happen at the school. Most of the staff at the school are recent graduates from Queen's and Lakehead Education: they are full of enthusiasm for the new school and look forward to combining superb educational standards for classroom work with a love of the pristine outdoor location for continuous inspirational moments with all students. The goal is to have the doors open by August 2014.I have been a teacher all of my life: most of this was at Trinity College School in Port Hope where I taught Geography along with a little Math, Science and PHE. The years coaching whitewater kayaking was one of many highlights there: seeing students get started in the sport and ending on Provincial and National teams. The last few years at Rosseau Lake College allowed me to look after their Outdoor Education Programmes and Expeditions. It was at Rosseau that I developed the Leadership "package" that will be a part of Quetico College School. Students graduated with many certifications that included first aid, lifesaving, coaching and Duke of Edinburgh's Award. At Quetico, CanFit Pro Certification will be added to the list. I can't wait to share this location and this vision with all. If you are in the area, you are always welcome to drop by and see the place. It's 170km west of Thunder Bay just off Highway 11 on Highway 633.
