I love working as a CIO. My favorite CIO job would be one in which I take over an under-performing team and over time patiently build it into a high-performing team. That is how things have gone with my last three jobs. My approach is to build from the inside out, focusing on the IT team. It’s not about me; it’s all about the team. While building up the team, it is critical that the CIO also build strong working relationships and building trust with other leaders across the company, particularly those who rely heavily on technology. Led team of 150 staff and 70 contractors. Products included analytics solutions supporting member performance improvement initiatives in the areas of clinical outcomes, operational performance, nursing resource optimization, physician practice optimization, and supply chain optimization. Served as UHC's interim CIO for 9 months working for B.E. Smith. Joined UHC as permanent CIO in March 2011. In November 2013, was given additional responsibilities to manage UHC's product teams. Number of staff managed increased from 70 to 125 and operating budget was $25,000,000. Areas of responsibility increased from those of CIO alone to IT plus product management and support for all of UHC's products. Products utilized by more than 25,000 staff at member institutions.Key accomplishments include:• In 2014, UHC was named the #2 small company to work for in IT in the US by Computerworld magazine in its Best Places to Work in IT ranking;• Implemented an IT Steering Committee to provide oversight for IT investments and projects;• Saved $900K on major server and storage purchases by leading competitive bidding and negotiations;• Each year, conducted comprehensive internal customer satisfaction surveys. Customer satisfaction was routinely 95%+ across the board;• Achieved very high employee satisfaction ratings based on annual surveys conducted by HR utilizing an outside third-party survey firm;• Built a robust business continuity/disaster recovery capability which was tested quarterly;• UHC underwent annual HIPAA audits by a leading audit firm as well as stringent penetration tests by a leading security firm.
