Hydrothermal vent systems host complex biological communities. The evolution of the microbial communities hosted by geochemical activity in the subseafloor remains poorly understood. Working in collaboration with scientists at Carleton College and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, I seek to understand population-level evolution in several communities of Methanothermococcus archaea sampled from the Mid-Cayman Rise.

The Biology Stockroom at Carleton College manages the lab equipment, media, and supplies for both faculty and class-based labs. As a Stockroom Assistant, I was responsible for the day-to-day management of a variety of duties, including lab equipment sanitation, lab setup, biological and chemical media preparation and various organizational activities.

In the Oesper Lab, I worked to develop a method for effectively visualizing and interfacing with phylogenetic trees reconstructed from tumor sequence data. We aimed to develop a method for scientists to efficiently analyze, summarize, and compare phylogenetic outputs from a variety of phylogeny reconstruction algorithms.

The Prefect Program at Carleton College works to provide academic and personal resources to students in a variety of subjects. Student prefects are the core of this program. Prefects are required to attend the class they are responsible for supporting. We arrange personal and small group tutoring, review sessions, and generate practice materials in collaboration with professors and Academic Support Center Personnel. Prefects are trained to effectively create collaborative learning environments and communicate course concepts to students.I have served at the student prefect for Biology 126 (Energy Flow in Biological Systems) and Biology 380 (Biochemistry), covering topics including cell biology, grassland and oceanographic ecology and biochemistry.

Optimized fluorescence microscopy imaging of killing assays in the Pukatzki lab with Vibrio cholera and E. coli in order to explore the effects of point mutations on the bacterial Type VI secretion system. Experience included conducting killing assays, creating knockouts, Southern and Western blotting, bacterial culture preparation, experience with fluoresence microscopy, flow cytometry, and imaging technology.
