About Michael Holden Mbe

A family man with two children, Michael has led his businesses using the same family ethos. Moving to Northern Ireland in 1999 to marry Jennifer, they started their business as an extension of a family background within the door industry. A member of the Institute of Managers and extending his knowledge for the entrepreneurship at the University of Ulster, benefits the innovation projects that maintain the business development. He is also passionate about sharing these ideas with local colleges and schools to further work experience opportunities. He also uses his skills to assist in the Scouting Movement as well as disability charities, both locally and as a member of the European Network of Independent Living.Becoming a wheelchair user due Motor Neurone Disease (ALS), I became increasingly frustrated at the second rate facilities provided for people living with disabilities. I decided to launch a website so other people in a similar situation can begin to reveal their experiences too.

    100,000 people on the island of Ireland require either an electric hoist or changing bench in order to go to the toilet. Currently, there are only a small number of such public facilities around the country. Individuals and their families are forced to make the choice between being isolated at home, or risk injury, infection and the indignity of being changed on a public toilet floor in order to get out of the house. Mobiloo is a not for profit organisation providing fully accessible mobile toilet facilities. Each of our vehicles for change is equipped with adult sized changing benches, electric hoists and enough space to allow up to two family members/carers to provide assistance if needed. Our mission is to enable disabled people and their loved ones to attend any event or activity - events from which they are often excluded due to lack of adequate facilities.Mobiloo is recommended by the Changing Places Consortium as a mobile solution, enabling those with even the most complex care needs the chance to get out of the house and enjoy the same activities as anyone else. Mobiloo provides a complete service; our facilities are attended when in operation to ensure they are kept clean, the equipment is charged and operational and to ensure proper use of the specialist equipment on board. Each of our units is self-contained so for shorter events, no power or water is needed.

    We will shortly be setting up a service user and carer reference group. We will be asking Personal Public Involvement Groups, Integrated Care Partnerships, the Patient Client Council and the Royal College of GPs Patients in Practice group to nominate 12 service user and carer representatives to take part in this group. Service users and carers who join the reference group will have an opportunity to:  Bring a service user or carer perspective to this work  Input into the proposals for the new model for primary care services  Share lived experiences to help improve the provision of primary care  Support wider engagement with service user and carers  Contribute to active learning process as the new model is rolled out. We will also be seeking to meet with some of the key community projects identified by participants at the engagement workshop. We will be gathering information from GPs about the mix of work which they undertake in general practice.
