Building Science Engineer

Burnaby, Bc, Ca

I work with architects and contractors by reviewing drawings and specifications relating to enclosure design. My reviews examine designs for feasibility, cost-effectiveness, materials compatibility, thermal efficiency, airtightness, and watertightness. I also evaluate progress installation in the field and work with contractors to develop solutions for conditions not anticipated in the drawings.I also go out to perform conditions assessments of existing buildings. I use a detailed understanding of both enclosure and mechanical systems to develop solutions aimed at the whole building.I work with the California Building and Energy Codes on a regular basis. I keep up to date on future code changes in order to anticipate future shifts in building practice and in the industry.

Project Engineer

St Louis, Missouri, Us

My first three years at Integral Group focused on analysis, energy modeling, and simulation. Using software tools (and good ol' fashioned Excel) I have helped architects evaluate design options and how those decisions impact factors ranging from thermal comfort to energy use intensity. The experience gave me a deep understanding of how to best answer design questions using appropriate levels of analysis. My latter 3 years included deep involvement with mechanical HVAC design. I use my analytical experience on an everyday basis and apply it towards tangible HVAC and envelope design questions. I've worked on many different types of projects, mainly commercial offices, K-12 schools, and multi-family residential buildings. Along the way I gained familiarity with a wide swath of both air-based and water-based systems. Particularly interesting design challenges that I engaged with included designing a Thermafuser VAV system to operate acoording to ASHRAE 62.1 Appendix A ventilation methods, designing a small scale heating hot water plant with condensing boilers, and many others.I have studied under facade experts and am a Certified Passive House Consultant. The knowledge I've gained has allowed me to teach in-house seminars on the basics of wall assembly details, thermal bridging, and moisture transfer. As I gained in mechanical design knowledge, I shared my lessons by conducting training on ventilation calculations, load calculations, and basic controls.I was deeply engaged with internal staff development, especially with strengthening the feedback loops in order to continually improve our standards and practice. I organized and facilitated monthly conversations so that staff at all levels and within all disciplines can work together outside of the traditional team boundaries.
